GPS battery drain on iPhone: plan for the whole drive.

Continuous GPS recording uses power, alongside a bright screen or navigation app. Torq lets you choose GPS accuracy and record with the screen locked. Set up before departure and keep the journey. Check battery usage afterward to learn what your iPhone used.

Start with the screen and recording settings

Choose the display you need for that trip. If you want a saved route but do not need the gauge in view, start recording and lock the phone. Torq can continue recording in the background with location access allowed. Keeping the gauge visible is a different use case, with the screen active for longer.

Balanced or High Accuracy

Choose the location request your trip needs

Torq's Balanced mode asks iOS for less precise positions; High Accuracy requests the best available location accuracy. Apple explains that location configuration affects which hardware the system uses and how much energy it needs. The setting is a request to iOS, not a guarantee of a particular reading or battery saving.

Try Balanced on a familiar route and review the saved trace afterward. If its position detail is insufficient for the corners you want to inspect, use High Accuracy. Compare recordings under similar conditions before deciding which tradeoff suits your phone. Torq has not published a battery-life figure that applies to every iPhone and journey.

Torq replaying a drive through Falls Canyon: the route drawn as a speed heat map on the map, a marker at the car, 21 mph with 6:14 elapsed and 2.31 miles, a G-force circle reading 0.14 G, and 2x to 16x playback controls.

Check what used the battery after the drive

Open iPhone Settings, then Battery. Review the period that includes your journey and look at the apps used during it. Depending on your iOS version, the details separate activity on screen from activity in the background. Navigation, music and other tasks can contribute alongside Torq.

Background activity during a recording is expected. It means the app was working without being the foreground screen, not necessarily that it was running after you finished the trip. Check the time period before drawing that conclusion.

For a useful comparison, note duration, battery levels, screen use, accuracy mode and charging. Change one setting on a later comparable drive. This helps you understand your own usage; it is not a controlled benchmark or a prediction for another phone.

Keep an offline plan separate from a power plan

GPS recording can work without a cellular data connection, but offline does not mean that recording stops using energy. The phone still needs location updates and Torq still writes the trip. Switching off data is not a substitute for choosing your accuracy mode or ending an unwanted recording.

On a long drive, have a charging option available. Reduce unnecessary screen brightness before departure and end the recording when the journey is over. If battery use looks unusual across several apps, review Apple's battery guidance and the phone's battery health rather than assuming the GPS app explains all of it.

Questions

Does locking the screen stop Torq recording?

No. With a recording started and location access allowed, Torq can continue in the background. The screen can turn off while location recording still uses power.

Does Balanced mode guarantee longer battery life?

No fixed saving is promised. Balanced changes the accuracy requested from iOS. The result depends on the phone, reception, screen use and other activity, so check your own recordings and battery usage.

Will disabling Location Services help me keep recording longer?

It prevents Torq from receiving the locations needed for the route. Keep location access enabled for the recording, and manage power through the recording mode, screen use and charging instead.

Set up once, keep the drive.

Choose your accuracy mode in Torq, start recording and leave the phone alone until you park. Review the route afterward with the display setup that suits your journey.
