A 0-100 km/h timer that only reports what it actually saw.

When a drive contains a clean launch from a standstill to 100 km/h, Torq times it from the GPS trace and keeps the best. When it does not, the field stays empty rather than guessing.

0-100, not 0-60

The measurement is 0 to 100 km/h, which is 0 to 62 mph. Torq is not a 0-60 timer, and the distinction matters by a few tenths: a car doing 0-60 in 6.0 seconds needs roughly 6.3 to reach 62. If you compare with published figures, compare with the 0-100 km/h column, which European and Asian manufacturers publish, or add about five percent to the 0-60 time.

How a launch is detected

A section of the drive counts as a launch only if it begins under 5 km/h and climbs to 100 without a lift of more than 5 km/h along the way. The moment the car crosses 100 is not a sample, so the timestamp is interpolated between the last fix under 100 and the first at or above it, assuming the speed rose linearly across that second. If a drive has several launches, the fastest is reported.

What one-second GPS does to the number

Under open sky, GPS speed from a phone is accurate to about 0.1 m/s, which is good enough to know when 100 km/h was reached to within a tenth of a second or so. The bigger error is the start: the first fix under 5 km/h might have been taken a full second before the car actually moved, and Torq cannot know which part of that second was the launch. So the times carry an uncertainty of a few tenths, mostly on the slow side. A dedicated performance meter samples ten to twenty-five times a second and uses an accelerometer to catch the instant of movement, which is how it gets to a hundredth. The speed used is the filtered speed, not the raw one. Torq runs a robust outlier filter over the trace before any analysis, so a satellite glitch that momentarily reports 120 km/h does not complete a launch that never happened.

Where the time lives

A detected launch appears in the trip detail with the other vehicle dynamics: top corner speed, max acceleration, max deceleration, peak G. The best time across all trips is a personal record in the Ranks tab. The G-force page explains the longitudinal G reading that accompanies a launch.

Closed course only. A launch to 100 km/h is illegal on most public roads. Torq records passively and has a speed-limit alert; it is not a reason to drive like that.

Questions people ask

Does Torq time 0-60 mph?

Not exactly. Torq times 0 to 100 km/h, which is 0 to 62 mph, and reports it in the trip detail and as a personal record. It is not a 0-60 timer in the American sense, and the number is a few tenths slower than a true 0-60 would be, because the car covers the last 2 mph after 60. The page title says 0-100 because that is what is measured.

How does it know a launch happened?

Torq scans the drive for a section where the speed starts below 5 km/h, rises without dropping back, and crosses 100 km/h. If the speed falls by more than 5 km/h before reaching 100, the attempt is abandoned and the scan continues. The crossing time is interpolated between the last sample under 100 and the first at or over it. The fastest such segment in the trip is the trip's time.

How accurate is a GPS 0-100 time?

Plus or minus a few tenths of a second. GPS speed itself is good to about 0.1 m/s under open sky, but the fixes arrive once a second, so both the start and the crossing are interpolated. Dedicated performance boxes sample at 10 to 25 Hz to close that gap. Treat Torq's number as an honest approximation, good for comparing your own runs, not for settling an argument with a magazine test.

Why does a drive show no 0-100 time?

Because it never contained a clean launch. City driving rarely gets from a stop to 100 km/h without a lift, and a highway on-ramp usually starts rolling. The field only appears when a complete acceleration segment is detected; most ordinary trips do not have one, and that is correct behavior.

Where do I see my best time?

The trip detail shows the time for that drive. The Ranks tab keeps Best 0-100 km/h as a personal record, alongside the all-time top speed, best corner score, peak G-force and the hardest acceleration and braking.

Where should I do this?

On a closed course or private road where it is legal and safe. Torq is designed for passive recording; the timer is a byproduct of the drive, not a reason to make one. Public roads have speed limits, and the app has an alert for them.
